An easy and pleasant ride to discover the mysteries of the Castle of Fumone, with its ghosts and legends. Our route will lead us through the countryside of the Ciociaria, a rural region of Lazio known for its strong traditions and flavours, along a cycling route built on the line of the old railway Roma/Fiuggi.
Let’s enjoy the peaceful flowing of this path, marked by the dismantled railway stations of the towns of Paliano, Acuto and Piglio, riding on the side of Prenestini Mountains with the panoramic view of Central Italy: on the left, the Apennines, on the right the countryside.
Between rail remains and old grade crossings, we will reach the beautiful town of Fiuggi, known for its health spa and waters. From there onwards, the road goes on descent to the calm and blue waters of the Lake of Canterno, before the final climb to our destination, where the strain will be rewarded by the lunch!
The ancient citadel of Fumone (Arx Fumonis), near Alatri, is a fascinating medieval village characterized by the castle of Caetani noble family, that once was used as a lookout for the pirates: in Italian “Fumone” means “big smoke”, and a local proverb says: “When Fumone smokes, the whole country trembles”; it was the last prison of the Pope Celestinus V (the one who abdicated), and has a long history full of bloody deeds and ghost legends. Between these, the spirit of an Antipope imprisoned inside its walls and the one of Emilia Caetani, who was the mother of the little heir of the family Longhi, poisoned at the age of 5 by his sisters, whose mummified body is still visible inside in the castle.
The “Taverna del Barone” is a true medieval inn, with waiters dressed in traditional clothing of Ciociaria, inside the old citadel, with wood ceiling and bare stone walls. The atmosphere is simple and genuine, and if we are lucky we will meet accordion players singing between the tables, with their folk and sometimes indecent ballads! The menu is fixed and made of traditional receipts: cold cuts, cheeses and bruschette, two first courses (usually sagne with tomato or maltagliati with beans, typical pasta of this region) and roastbeef with baked potatoes.
