The countryside on the south of Rome are quite difficult to describe. The medieval history of abbeys and the more recent one of the Second World War, Homeric mythology and Virgilian epic, the nature of immense coastal dune or of the shadowy forests of eucalyptus in the National Park.
An easy tour with pretty flat routes, that in just two days will make you discover the incredible variety of this region riding a trekking bike along paths and secondary roads in the South Pontino countryside.
Our tour will start from the Latina railway station, and we immediately will ride through fields and country until the wonderful Ninfa Natural Oasis.
A true jewel of the Roman and Medieval Age, with a small castle surrounded by a pond that has become WWF site because of the seasonal migrations of various species of birds.
After the guided tour, we keep on pedaling a few kilometers to reach other two magnificent spots: the Abbey of Valvisciolo, one the most important examples of Cistercian monastery in Italy, and the fairy village of Sermoneta.
But its charm has to be gained: to reach the citadel, in fact, we have to do 3 km of climbing, the only ones of the whole tour. But once we have passed the ascent, a typical lunch waits for us to be restored!
Once our stomach is full, we’ll visit Caetani Castle, a fortress owned by Caetani noble family, one of the most powerful in the Central Italy during Middle Age, with the panoramic view of the Pontinian countryside, with Rome on the right and the blue horizon of the sea straght in front of us.
A comfortable bike lane will lead us from Latina and its rationalist architecture to the sea, whose waves will induce our sleep after this first day of tour.
The following day our tour continue moving southwards, along a beautiful segment of Tyrrenic coast that has unparalleled sand dunes: once it was a swampy and malarial area, but after the reclaim works these basins have regained their naturalistic charm with a precious avifaunistic ecosystem.
We are talking about the Circeo National Park, a perfect example of Mediterranean scrub, where we could meet wild boars, herons and other protected species.
Then our ride will move to the shadow of eucaliptuses and maritime pines, to continue the route along the old reclaim canals of the South Pontino countryside, until the stop stop of the tour: the Fossanova Abbey, masterpiece of Gothic Benedictine period, last home of Saint Thomas Aquinas.
